A Note From Sandie
January/February 2012
Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a great holiday season, and that you are ready for some fun family winter-time activities. Whether you prefer indoors or outdoors, our Family Events calendar has something to keep you and your family occupied during these long winter months.
Just in case these winter months bring a power outage your way, be sure to read our article When the Lights Go Out: 6 Tips for Surviving Without Power. It has specific steps you can take to prepare for a loss of electricity and to get through it when it happens. We recently lost our electric for 28 hours (during that strange October snow storm). While the hardship was minimal (other than our daughter’s tragic loss of internet connection with her friends), it gave us a taste of the “Little House on the Prairie” existence, and we vowed to prepare ourselves more thoroughly for the next one. This article helped us do just that.
For this issue’s humor article returning columnist, Lela Davidson, offers a description of her husband’s attempts to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle in Losers Always Win. Unfortunately, I can see a lot of myself in Lela’s husband. Many times I have been motivated to get into shape and drop a few pounds in the process, but I usually find some reason not to start “right now.” Maybe 2012 will be my year to turn that around. And maybe it will be Lela’s husband’s year, as well. Hey a girl can dream!
Whichever direction the New Year takes you, I hope that this issue of Parents’ Source makes it easier for you to find ways to enjoy spending time with your family. If you need support to be the best parent you can be, look to our Parenting Connection listings for scheduled classes and support groups as well as for ongoing services in our area. Also, be sure to check out the listings on our website. Not only are there calendar items that did not fit into the printed book, but there are also hyperlinks to web resources, an article archive, and a full list of all the Parent to Parent tips we have received over the years.
Speaking of Parent to Parent tips, please consider sending us some for publication in an upcoming issue. We love to hear the innovative ways that our readers have solved a problem or made a connection with their children.
