It's Time to Celebrate 10 years and 50 issues of Parents' Source! Reminiscing a bit, we can remember our first 12-page issue. We only bought enough letterhead and office supplies to make it through one issue at a time. Our daughter, Meghan was not quite 3 and our son, Ryan was 18 months. Most business errands were conducted with one hand clutch-ing a car seat and the other a small toddler's sticky fingers.
I'll never forget attending an early business meeting. I put my best business suit on, slipped on my high heels, and stuffed my business papers in my briefcase. I arrived at the meeting on time and seemingly in control, so why were my associates laughing at me when I entered the room? Maybe it was the small beanie baby swinging from the corner of my breifcase, that had apparently gotten caught in my haste to be on time. I was definitely the epitome of the "working mom".
Chris, who joined the business 3 years later, had always been behind the scenes, but he now was taking a more prominent position in the daily operations. The fears of leaving a full-time job wore off when we both saw how much more could be done together. Chris also enjoyed adding a fresh "father's perspective" and spending more time with the children.
What kept us going was stubborn determination, and positive encouragement from our family and friends. There was also a handful of folks in our original circulation area, Berks County, who thought enough of our simple concept of empowering the people in our community with relevant parenting information, to support our efforts. That handful of supporters turned into a following, who helped us grow from one county into a second, Lancaster County.
Encouragement and support from other caring people can go a long way, as it has for us. When you transfer this supportive attitude to your children, you realize that believing in them can be such a powerful motivator. A few kind words can change that "I can't do it" attitude into a "There is nothing I can't do" attitude.
We thank our family, friends, advertisers, readers and staff contributors for all the encouraging words they have given over the years and for helping us to obtain our, "I can do" attitude.
